Elopak introduces Pure-Pak Essense: sustainable aseptic packaging

Pure-Pak eSense cartons use technologies from our latest portfolio along with our traditional sustainably sourced carton design and are constructed with a hybrid polyolefin barrier instead of aluminum. The result is 50% less carbon footprint than standard Pure-Pak aseptic cartons and is 100% recyclable.
The Pure-Pak eSense carton without the aluminum layer fully unlocks its renewable potential. It also simplifies the recycling process, as the new structure of the polyolefin allows the separation of the fibers and layers of the polyolefin in one operation, and the polyolefin material does not contain cost-reducing elements. In addition, the cartons have fold lines for easy folding, which helps consumers empty all products before folding the cartons, making recycling easier and reducing food waste.
This is in line with Elopak’s commitment to promote a circular economy in net zero packaging, driving the transition from plastic bottles to fully renewable low-carbon cartons.
The first company to bring the benefits of Pure-Pak eSense to the market was GARCÍA CARRIÓN, a leading Spanish beverage manufacturer. The launch is a new milestone in the sustainable development of the DON SIMÓN brand, which lives up to its motto: “Caring for you and the planet.” A few years ago, the DON SIMÓN brand launched the Natural Brown Board, which made it possible to forego the process of packaging bleaching and join the CarbonNeutral® program. Now they have teamed up with Elopak once again to create aluminum-free aseptic packaging that helps them achieve their Zero Waste and Zero Net Emission goals.
Commenting on the launch, Marianne Groven, Elopak’s Director of Sustainability, said: “The introduction of the Pure-Pak eSense carton package is significant as it enhances the environmental options of our packaging for our customers in the aseptic field.”
“Aluminum is a finite resource that will not be replenished over time. In addition, aluminum production is relatively energy intensive and therefore has a higher carbon footprint than other materials in beverage cartons,” she added.

An innovative new barrier replaces the aluminum layer while maintaining the classic rigidity of a cardboard box.
Pure-Pak eSense cartons are available in 500 ml, 750 ml and 1 liter sizes, as well as 1.5 liter, 1.75 liter and 2 liter sizes, as well as US sizes. The box will be available with a range of compatible aseptic lids, as well as a capless easy open feature that reduces plastic consumption and further reduces carbon emissions.
Customers can also choose from second-generation renewable polyethylene or a carbon-neutral version of the Pure-Pak eSense box, offsetting remaining emissions with Elopak’s proven CarbonNeutral packaging program.
Patrick Verhelst, Chief Marketing Officer of Elopak, explained that the Pure-Pak eSense carton is a milestone in helping the brand meet consumers’ environmental expectations.
“Today’s consumers are constantly looking for ways to further reduce their environmental footprint without sacrificing functionality. With the introduction of Pure-Pak eSense carton packaging, our customers will be able to provide more sustainable packaging for a wider range of products, as well as offer sizes and closure options to meet any needs,” he said.
